Manga in other countriesManga arrived in the US, Italy, and France in the 1980s. It was initially disliked by Nipponophiles (those who love Japanese culture). This was because it was different from traditional culture. Manga did not sell well in America when it first came out. This is thought to be because a clear audience wasn't defined. DC and Marvel comics are part of the reason for the failure of manga. Teenage boys of the time wanted superhero comics. Manga did not give them this. However, these companies also supported manga. The writer of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns , Frank Miller, drew the cover art for the manga Lone Wolf and Cub. Sailor Moon helped manga become popular in other countries, by appealing to girls.
